On April 16, the SIAM Great Lakes Section Spring 2011 Meeting was held in historic Meadowbrook Hall on the campus of Oakland University. Over the years, topical themes for annual meetings have included Computational Fluid Dynamics, Computer Aided Design, Mathematics of Complex Systems, and most recently Bio-Mathematics. This year the theme was “Modeling and Numerical PDEs in Mathematical Biology and Applications.”

Over seventy attendees enjoyed hearing the plenary speakers Carlos Castillo-Chavez, Arizona State University; David Caulk, General Motors Research (photo, right); Mary Ann Horn, NSF; Doron Levy, University of Maryland; Guowei Wei, Michigan State University; and Hulin Wu, University of Rochester. Topics in the plenary presentations ranged from “Epidemics” to “Antibiotic Resistance” to “Stem Cells” to “Lost Foam Casting – an Engine Manufacturing Process.”

Student participation in Section meetings is always dynamic. This year the eighteen student poster topics ranged from “Heart Defibrillation” to “Influenza” to “Brain Tumors” to “Meteorology.”

Programs and selected presentations from the past several Section meetings are posted on the Sections website: http://groups.engin.umd.umich.edu/siam/.
